[PASSIVE VOICE] whole class activity

1. make different bingo boards with pictures:

lose a chance if they make gramatically wrong sentences.
others get to correct the mistake.






 





1. "What is the difference between being active and being passive?
    What kind of person is described as passive?"
--> Students grasp the idea of passive and active.


2. "Which sentence would you call passive?"
    [ I made a cake.     :    A cake was made. ]


3. Students write down the basic form of passive sentence.
   [ be verb + participle ]

4. Students answer the correct participle form of different verbs.
--> It is better to group verbs into A-A-A, A-B-C, A-B-A...

5. Students make sentences that describe pictures.

[RELATIVE PRONOUN] Common errors

Common errors of Korean students

A. Subjective relative pronoun

1) don't omit subject in relative clause
ex) I met a woman who she lived in Beijing.

2) omit be-verb in relative clause
ex) We met a man who ø from England.

3) misplace relative clause in complex structure
ex) The cat was there which we saw yesterday.

B. Objective relative pronoun

1) don't omit object in relative clause
ex) There is a car which Mike bought the car.


C. Relative pronoun (regardless of its case)

1) use wrong relative pronoun
ex) I saw a movie who was very sad.
    He is the man which won five gold medals.



[PASSIVE VOICE] Common errors

Common errors of Korean students

1) participle: wrong participle from A-A-A pattern and A-B-C pattern.
                 *hitten, *writen, *breaken, *maken

2) be-verb in future tense: change 'be' to match the subject.
                                   *The book will is written by him.

3) participle in future tense: *The house will be build.  
                                     *The room will be clean.

4) subject-verb match: *Cookies is made.  
                              *These books is bought.  
                              *English are spoken.



Difficulty level of questions

Level 1) Write participle forms of verbs.
ex) Pyramids were _________(build) around 400 A.D.

Level 2) Change be-verb to match the subject.
ex) [Present] This book ______ written by him.
    [Past] These cars _______ made in India.
-> Students find it more difficult to write sentences in past or future tense.
    If the subject is in plural, it requires more attention.
 
Level 3) Convert active sentences into passive.
ex) Mike read a book to the blind. 
  = A book __________ to the blind by Mike.
-> Students often fail to recognize that the tense is past.

Level 4) Find the error and correct it.
ex) These books is bought. 
     Cookies was made.
     English are spoken here.
-> more challenging options are: a subject is an abstract noun, or 
   a subject is plural + past tense

Level 5) Make a passive sentence that describes the picture.

It takes time for students to differentiate
the agent and the theme.
"The snake is... err...
 The snake is eaten a mouse."

(Teacher)"Wow, the snake is eaten by a mouse!"

"Oh, no. A mouse.. is eaten.. by a snake.
Yes, a mouse is eaten by a snake!"
